Powerday Expands Eco-Friendly Fleet With Volvo FM Electric Low Entry Hook Loaders
Powerday recently continued its electric fleet expansion with the addition of two Volvo FM Electric Low Entry 8x4 rigids to join the two Volvo FE Electrics the firm purchased in 2024. Volvo says the London-based waste and recycling management firm’s electric FMs are the first in the UK to be fitted with hook loader bodies. Each lorry is equipped with a 360-kilowatt-hour battery pack and has a five-star Direct Vision Standard rating.
“Having successfully introduced two Volvo FE Electric skip loaders in 2024, we believe the time is right to trial electric hook loaders as the next step,” says Powerday CEO Edward Crossan. “The FM Low Entry gives us a strong platform to move faster on safety and sustainability simultaneously, reinforcing our drive to cut emissions while improving how we work.

Focused On Safety & Sustainability
The battery-electric zero-tailpipe-emission FM Low Entry offers near-silent operation and a spacious cab with a low instep and a flat floor, providing enhanced visibility. The FM is also loaded with safety features, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Advanced Emergency Braking, Driver Alert Support, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Support, and Side Collision Avoidance Support systems. The Camera Monitoring System improves vision around the truck, even in challenging conditions.
Powerday also specified its FMs with the Volvo Dynamic Steering system and full air suspension. The company carefully planned its battery configuration by running a route simulation to ensure the right fit for the job. The electric FMs, which are expected to log 30,000 kilometres (18,640 miles) each year, will recharge using a 150-kilowatt DC charger at Powerday’s Willesden Junction site.
Power & Range
Depending on the chosen battery configuration, the Volvo FM Electric can deliver up to 540 kW and a range of up to 470 km (292 mi). The batteries can charge from 20% to 80% in just over an hour with DC fast charging.
